Domain alone will not propel your website to the top of search engine pages. You’ll need individual pages–your website’s landing pages–to do the heavy lifting for your search optimization. Landing pages organize your website and break it down by subject. Your site will have greater impact and rank higher in Internet searches is you build out each landing page to make it informative and visually stunning. Here are 6 features of great landing sites:
#1: They pass the 5-second test.
We’ve talked about the 5-second rule for website visits; this also applies to landing pages. You’ve got approximately 3-5 seconds to keep a web surfer on your landing page, so make sure that the page layout is interesting and informative.
#2: They include visuals that convey the page’s message.
A good visual stops site visitors in their tracks. Photos of products, landscapes, people and animals always command attention. If your product is visually arresting, place it front and center. This landing page from the state of Colorado is a good example. The majestic landscape is a perfect backdrop for all the information available to site visitors.
#3: There is no unnecessary navigation away from call-to-action buttons.
We’ve talked about the importance of call-to-action buttons in prior blog posts (find them here and here.) Whether you want web visitors to sign up for a seminar or request more product information, you want to keep their eyes on the landing page long enough to leave their email. Don’t let anything on the page distract your site visitors!
#4: The text motivates the reader with take-action copy.
Create a sense of urgency with your copy. Make it clear and concise so that your site’s visitor knows exactly what to do to get the information they need. In this example, this travel agency’s website instructs the visitor to “plan vacations, book now, and save money;” all important buzzwords for potential clients.
#5: All the necessary information is clearly marked.
#6: Links to outside sources are available.
While you don’t want to lead visitors away from your site, it’s a good idea to tell them what other visitors have to say about your business. Include testimonials, 3rd-party approval from institutions such as the Better Business Bureau, and other customer reviews. Keep it brief and keep it honest.
